What are the chances?
A woman in a long black dress.
A large high ceiling room with long curtains draped over the large windows that span across the wall.
Black & white.
Hardly any light, an abundance of shadows.
A hauntingly familiar tune starts playing. You've never listened to it before, but you could swear it sounds familiar.
So familiar.
A waltz.
You cannot see the woman's face, but she has long hair. And as the music plays, she begins to dance.
It's a waltz, but she's dancing alone. With her arms raised as if she was holding her partner and they were dancing together.
She swirls across the room, and you dance with her in your mind. Nostalgia hits you. Your chest floods with emotion, a deep longing for something you loved and lost, for a cherished and precious place that felt yours, where you belonged. It could be the arms of a lover, it could be a land, it could be a state of mind.
She dances away, you close your eyes as the violin reaches a crescendo and you can feel shivers down your spine, you're carried away by every note, the violin touching the subtlest, most refined chords of your soul, of your very being, and you could swear you can see the musicians now, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Tindersticks, Tuxedomoon, they're all there accompanying her as she dances away her longing, her pain, her aching heart.
When you open your eyes again you feel like you've returned from a journey that took you to a faraway place, an inward journey that leaves you...
You don't know in what state.
So you hit play again.
And tell me what are the chances of me
leaving you in the rain
all covered in pain?
and tell me what are the chances of you
passing me by in your car
when i was still there..
left alone with my chances
with my nightmares, with my fears and hopes to dry...
You are a nightmare, it's a nightmare
What are the chances of me?
What are the chances of you?
